Air Engine Project
The task was to manufacture parts for a working 1-cylinder air engine according to specifications given to us in the form of engineering drawings. This was a group project involving 4 members among which the the work was divided.
Key skills developed during this project:
-
Setting out manufacturing plans - this involved planning the order in which features had to be machined into the part, appropriate positioning of the part to allow consistent measurements while working using the machine's cooradiante-based positioning system, etc.
-
Applying theory-based lessons on reading engineering drawings to practical work
-
Handling metal working machinery - using the lathe, turret milling machine and tap and die for threading
-
Improved understanding of the affects of tolerances in manufacturing since each group memeber made a certain list of parts and they all had to fit correctly when put together.
